Recycle your old or non-working appliances. Minnesota law bans major appliances from landfill disposal. The Lyon County Regional Landfill collects appliances for recycling. The fee is $15 each major appliance. Major appliances include:

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning):

• Air conditioners
• Dehumidifiers
• Furnaces
• Heat pumps

KITCHEN:

• Conventional ovens/ranges/stoves
• Dishwashers
• Garbage disposals
• Microwave ovens
• Refrigerators/freezers
• Trash compactors

OTHER:

• Washers/dryers
• Water heaters (* metal outer-casing only *). Plastic outer casing water heaters must be disposed as garbage.
• RV Refrigerator. *** NOTE *** The disposal cost for an RV fridge is $75.

• Keep the environment safe by recycling rechargeable batteries.
• Household batteries may contain heavy metals such as nickel cadmium, carbon zinc or mercury which can be harmful to the environment if disposed of improperly.
• Reduce fire hazard in your home, and at garbage and recycling facilities; especially from lithium batteries.
• Vehicle and other lead-acid batteries can be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Lyon County Public Works building.

Did you know car seats have an expiration? Removing expired, or damaged and recalled car seats from circulation helps protect children if an accident occurs. Nearly 95% of the car seat components can be recycled. Lyon County collects car seats or recycling for free as a service to its residents.

Bring your unwanted car seat to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Lyon County Public Works building.

Donate, reuse or sell clothing that is clean and in good condition. Below are just a few locations that take clothing donations; check your area for additional ones. Be Respectful: NO garbage please.

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) televisions and monitors are banned from disposal at the landfill for everyone, and many businesses and non-profit organizations are also prohibited from throwing computer equipment in the garbage.

Electronic waste can be disposed of for a small fee at either the Lyon County Regional Landfill (2520 - 200th Ave, Lynd), or the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility at Lyon County Public Works (504 Fairgrounds Road, Marshall).

Some computer electronics may be disposed of for FREE. Laptops are collected for free and evaluated for potential refurbishing by the Lyon County Computer project.

Rigid packaging foam (e.g. styrofoam is a nuisance at the landfill and blows into neighboring fields, and wildlife areas.  Rigid packaging foam can be recycled to make molding and picture frames.

*** IMPORTANT *** DO NOT PUT FOAM IN RECYCLING. It will be rejected and thrown in the garbage. Bring your rigid foam to the Lyon County Public Works building for processing.

Lyon County collects mattresses for processing and recycling at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Lyon County Public Works building. (Address:  504 Fairgrounds Road, Marshall, MN 56258.) The fee is $20.00 each piece for acceptable mattresses. If mattresses are not acceptable for processing they must be landfilled at a cost of $60.00.  Lyon County partners with Advance Opportunities to provide employment for adults with disabilities in the disassembly of mattresses.

DAMAGED
Damaged beds take too long to disassemble, and occasionally have sharp edges or splinters. For this reason, damaged boxframes are not recycled, but landfilled as garbage.
FILTHY
Each person has a different idea of what is considered “dirty”. A Filthy mattress is more than just dirty, however, and is not taken for recycling. Call if you have questions.

Large metal items may have value. Talk to Altar Metal Recycling in Marshall to see if your metal object can be recycled. Other options include the Lyon County Regional landfill where metal items such as bed frames, bikes, and grills can be disposed of at no charge.

Tips for Spring/Fall Clean Up or Moving Day

• Residents who participate in their own clean-up day or with their city/county are encouraged to plan ahead.
• Plan your load. The items that need to be first off a load should be the last items on your truck or trailer.
• Call ahead to double check what time the business is open and what they do take. There are many places that have what they do/do not take on their websites.
• Make sure your things are clean. Businesses that accept items that are no longer wanted can reject your items if they are not meeting their standards for care.
